Greater Halifax Partnership & NSCC Partner for Economic Growth

(HALIFAX) November 14, 2006 - The Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) and the Greater Halifax Partnership (GHP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding which will enhance the linkages between the business community and NSCC.

The agreement formalizes a partnership that aligns the well-educated and highly-skilled NSCC population with the GHP’s business knowledge and expertise.  The result will be a collaborative effort to gain ground on labour shortages and increase economic growth in Greater Halifax.

"Collaboration is central to the work we do at the partnership," says Stephen Dempsey, President and CEO, Greater Halifax Partnership.  "Partnering with NSCC, an educational leader across the region, the province and the country is critical to continued economic growth for not only Greater Halifax, but the province as well."

This is not the first time NSCC and the GHP have joined together to tackle job market demands.  After conducting SmartBusiness meetings with the building supplies industry, industry officials revealed a need for skilled salespersons.  The Partnership took the issue to the NSCC, which responded by developing, with members of the building supply industry, a 20-week course - including a month-long practical work-experience component.

"The implications of these programs for the building supply and construction industries are important," says Dr. Joan McArthur Blair, President, NSCC. "The ability to respond to industry in real time to real issues is the result of strong partnerships between the business community and the educational sector. We plan to see many more solutions of this nature happen through our relationship with GHP."

Initiatives like this are ongoing.  Drywallers in Nova Scotia are also facing a shortage of skilled labour, as well as many other trade industries, reinforcing the need for such relationships.

The memorandum of understanding will build upon previous success and move towards constructing broader, stronger and lasting relationships with public and private sectors. This collaborative effort is designed to create the most effective and efficient labour market for the region.

The Greater Halifax Partnership is a private sector led organization responsible for the economic growth of Greater Halifax.  Its priorities are to retain and grow existing businesses and to recruit new businesses to the area.

NSCC's mission is to build Nova Scotia's economy and quality of life through education and innovation. NSCC offers over 100 programs to 9,000 students at 13 campuses across the province. 91 per cent of graduates are employed - 83 per cent in their field of study. In addition, 15,000 learners are enrolled in part time studies, apprenticeship, on-line learning, and customized training programs.
