Halifax Connector Program Expands to Include Young and Emerging Talent

Builds on success with immigrants and international students

HALIFAX, May 16, 2012 – Building on the success of its immigrant and international student Connector Program, the Greater Halifax Partnership is expanding the program to include young and emerging talent.

Started in 2009 and supported by the Province of Nova Scotia, the Connector Program links immigrants, international students and now young and emerging talent with local businesses so they can grow their professional networks and connect with employment opportunities in Halifax. The Connector Program has achieved great success. To date, 120 Participants have secured jobs and the program has been replicated in nine other cities throughout Canada.

“Halifax has a number of Connectors - businesses and people who are enthusiastic about the opportunity of connecting with the young and emerging talent in our community,” said Fred Morley, Executive Vice President and Chief Economist at Greater Halifax Partnership. “The simple, yet effective concept of our Connector Program benefits the Connector, the participant and Halifax.”

Doris Du moved from China to Halifax in 2008 to study finance at Saint Mary’s University. She participated in the international student stream of the program and used her connections to land a job with the Bank of Montreal as a client services representative.

“The Connector Program made it possible for me to meet with professionals in my industry and to share my enthusiasm and skills,” said Ms. Du. “Networking opens up opportunity, especially when you’re new to a place.”

Meeting Halifax’s young and emerging talent is the goal of many local businesses attending today’s announcement of the program’s expansion and celebration of achievements.

“The Connector Program has been a wonderful experience,” says Jason West, Senior Recruiter at RBC Royal Bank. “Through this partnership I have met with so many professional candidates and have had great success in finding the right fit for our organization.”
