Greater Halifax Partnership Congratulates Irving Shipbuilding Inc. on its Successful Shipbuilding Bid

Halifax, NS - October 19, 2011 – Greater Halifax Partnership President and CEO Paul Kent extends congratulations to Irving Shipbuilding Inc. on Halifax Shipyard being awarded the $25 billion combat vessel contract under the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime economic opportunity for Halifax and indeed, Nova Scotia,” said Paul Kent.  He added, “winning the bid is a reflection of the expertise, commitment and effort of the men and women at Irving Shipbuilding."

Support for the bid has been a partnership of business, community, labour, academic, and government leaders.  As part of the team, the Partnership, in conjunction with the Conference Board of Canada and Jupia Consulting, prepared an economic impact analysis of the project. It shows that building Canada’s next generation of naval vessels at Halifax Shipyard will be a game-changer for Nova Scotia.

This contract will mean a peak of 11,500 jobs; over $540 million in personal income; and over $350 million in federal, provincial and local tax revenue. The economic implications of this contract will be significant for the province, but not limited to Nova Scotia. We will need to call on hundreds of suppliers, and the result will be prosperity for businesses all across Canada.

Kent says the Partnership is pleased to have been part of the collective efforts to support the bid and looks forward to continued collaboration with partners on this and other projects that capitalize on our region’s best opportunities for economic growth.

“We applaud the leadership shown by Premier Dexter and the support of the community, from the Mayor and Council to the Chamber of Commerce, in the pursuit of this incredible economic opportunity,” said Kent. “The collaborative spirit that brought the community together around this opportunity must carry on as we work to ensure maximum benefits accrue to every corner of Nova Scotia.”
