Convergys announcement strengthens Halifax Moncton Growth Corridor

(HALIFAX, NS April 25, 2003) The Greater Halifax Partnership and Enterprise Greater Moncton are pleased to welcome Convergys to the Halifax Moncton Growth Corridor.

At a news conference earlier today, Premier John Hamm announced that Convergys Corp. will expand its Nova Scotia operations into the Truro area. Convergys will establish its new location at the Truro Power Centre, an economic development initiative of the Millbrook First Nation. The Power Centre is located within the Halifax Moncton Growth Corridor.

The Halifax Moncton Growth Corridor concept, launched by the Greater Halifax Partnership and Enterprise Greater Moncton in September 2002, is a formal economic link between Halifax and Moncton and all the communities in between. The Corridor will allow the region to leverage collective assets and garner increased attention in a global market.

“We congratulate Nova Scotia Business Inc. and the Truro Power Centre for bringing this important new development to the Corridor,” said Stephen Dempsey, President and CEO of the Greater Halifax Partnership. “265 jobs in the Truro area will have substantial direct and indirect benefits for all the communities in the Corridor. For every four jobs created in the Truro area, one job is created in the Corridor, and for every $100 increase in household income, the federal and provincial governments will receive $25.”

Ron Gaudet, President and CEO of the Greater Moncton Economic Commission, feels that New Brunswick and Nova Scotia must lead North America in economic growth for a sustained period in order to catch up to other regional economies. “We need to continue to attract companies like Convergys so the Halifax-Moncton Growth Corridor will continue to be a major driver of this growth.”

The Greater Halifax Partnership is the private sector led organization responsible for the economic growth of Greater Halifax. Its priority is to grow existing businesses while attracting new investment to the area. The Greater Halifax Partnership has an extensive network of investors that includes over 120 local, national and international businesses and all three levels of government working together to grow the economy of Greater Halifax.

The Agency is a business-minded organization operating under the leadership and guidance of people with private sector experience. Its mission is to provide leadership to enhance the quality of life and harmonious well-being of the people of the Greater Moncton area through sustainable economic development.
